About us
The magic of Donald Ross lives at Southern Pines Golf Club. The natural terrain that reveals each hole inspires the traditionalist and rewards the imaginative shot maker. All ability levels are accommodated with the diverse course conditions. By matching the slopes of the putting surfaces with the challenging green speeds, the play of the greens demand pace as well as direction for the successful putt.
We play Southern Pines so much you would think that we owned part of it. This Donald Ross classic has been a stop on the BGO every year I've participated except for the years at Myrtle and in the mountains. The wide fairways and punishing greens have made for more than one BGO moment.
Among the most memorable was the foursome of Stache, Rib, No-Knees, and Knife setting the old BGO record of -7 under in 2011.
While that was AMONG the most memorable THE most memorable moment at Southern Pines came a couple of years later when Virus was compeled to chase down a runaway golf cart. Seeing that big ass trucking across the fairway must have been one helluva sight to see.
Last year Southern Pines was purchased by the same group that owns Mid-Pines and Pine Needles and a restoration was performed to take the course back to more of what Donald Ross intended when the course was originally built in 1906. It looks to be a fantastic job and a tremendous challenge to play. The Southern Pines website has a nice set of videos on the restoration that you should view.
