BGO History
BGO History
In the Spring of 2001, with the opportunity to play one of the most sacred of golf courses Pinehurst #2 two friends set out on a journey that would produce a tradition of 20+ years. Little did they know as they gathered their friends to round out the foursome that day what they would build and the impact it would have.
This year is the 22nd Anniversary of that original round of golf. For 20+ years this group of high school friends has gathered, 100+ rounds of golf have been played, thousands of golf shots have been taken (yes, with a few exceptions most of us suck at the game), and too many stories to count have been told and retold. Our annual weekend has been summed up nicely by a guest of our home base, The Pinecrest Inn., which for those 20+ years (with 3 exceptions) has served as the home of The BGO.
The following excerpt is from a letter written by Mr. Kevin Foster, a regular PCI guest, to his son. It captures the essence and spirit of the BGO beautifully.
"That wish is that someday down the road you and your high school friends will have what my high school friends and I have - Pinehurst. Pinehurst, for us, is not just 5 days of golf. It is a state of mind. Truth be known, Pinehurst could be anywhere. It just so happens that is where we have chosen to go back in time. Back to a place in our lives where life-long friendships were formed. Back to a place where life was full of hopes and desires and you didn't seem to have a care in the world. Back to a simpler place, for life only gets more complicated as you grow older. When we gather, as we have done for the last 14 years, we gather to remember, to reminisce if you will, about those great times we shared growing up. There is no talk of how much money we may or may not have, or how big a house we may or may not have. Nothing material comes between us. You see, we are all equal in our own eyes. To be able to laugh and cry together. To share the good times and the bad times together. True friendships are not measured by the material things that life sometimes affords us. They are measured by the love and fellowship that we derive from them. For the person who beholds such friendships, he truly beholds on of the great gifts of life. It is these types of friendships that will help to see you through whatever may lie ahead."
In these 20+ years the BGO has left home base 3 times, once for Atlantic Beach (the perpetrators have not been back since), once to Myrtle Beach (2009), home base of The Knife at the time, and finally once in the North Carolina mountains near M&Ms cabin (2013). Who knows where the future will take us.
